School Garden Project changes an Irrigated Lawn into a Dry Garden
Escola Basica 2,3 João de Rosa, Rua Caique Bom Sucesso, Quelfes, OLHÂO
|
|
MGAP´s first meeting at the school took place in February 2023, present were Célia Inacio and Rosie Peddle representing MGAP. Both MGAP and the Freguesia de Quelfes have donated money to buy appropriate plants for the project. This project took part in the SEIVA 2023 programme (14 Oct to 22 Oct), a Week of Education and Environmental Volunteering Initiatives.

|
The first phase of planting took place on 16 October 2023 with the participation of the students and MGAP.
Copies of MGAP´s books "Flores Selvagens no Algarve " and "Orquídeas Selvagens no Algarve" were donated to the school for their library and distribution to students.
Objectives for the project: Eliminate irrigation in a garden area using native and Mediterranean vegetation. Create a pleasant, non-water-consuming garden area for pupils to enjoy in the area near the school entrance. This will create a green area that is sustainable from the point of view of water resources, while also serving as a showcase for some of the local flora and resistant vegetation. The results and experience gained from this project could be reproduced in future in other garden areas in the school grouping.
Scope: Rectangular area (approx. 3m X 25m) located next to the main entrance of EB 2.3 João de Rosa, Quelfes with a total area of around 75 m2.

Our Education Coordinator, Célia Inacio, is currently in contact with other schools who wish to make similar projects. This work follows on from the intervention made with Quelfes Freguesia and MGAP supports schools by donating copies of our publications to school libraries in Silves, Quelfes, Olhão and Lagos. Please let us know if you have contacts who would like to know more about our support for school gardens in the Algarve.

Would you like to Open your Carden?
|
|
If you would like to have the opportunity to host a visit by MGAP to your garden, we would love to hear from you.The best way of understanding gardening techniques and approaches is by seeing them in real-life, which is why garden visits are an essential part of our educational programme. It does not matter how well developed you garden is, there is always something to learn, both for the visitors and the garden owners. You may have:- A mature dry garden that shows what is possible
- An over-mature irrigated garden that you want to change to a dry garden
- A new garden area that you want to develop as a dry garden
- A lawn that you want to replace with a dry garden
It does not matter what type of garden you have. Visits can be arranged to allow visitors to learn from what you have done, to get ideas from visitors who have already developed their own garden and to share ideas of what has worked and what has not. And, of course, it is always good to meet new people and welcome old friends whilst in your own Garden
If you would be interested in finding out more, or have suggestions of gardens you know, please contact Michelle at mgapevents@gmail.com
